The Chinook Writing Box
Made entirely by hand in Calgary one box at a time.

Exterior Dimensions: 13W x 11D x 3 1/2H Interior Dimensions: 12W x 10D x 2 1/2H

Material: Solid American Black Walnut. The walnut used has been fully seasoned in Alberta’s dry climate. As a result, other than some minor seasonal variation, the box will not be subject to warping and cracking and worse, not closing or latching as a result.

Finish: Sanding to 180 grit followed by two applications tung oil and then by a furniture beeswax finish and hand buffing. The tung oil was applied to all surfaces inside and out to achieve a complete seal.

Hardware: Instead of exterior mounted hinges, 180 degree solid brass hidden barrel hinges were utilized. Not only does this give the box a cleaner look, these hinges completely eliminate any stresses that exterior hinges holding the lid vertically when open can subject the wood to. There are also no hinge screws to shear off under stress. This meant, however, the need to use a lid stay to limit swing. For this a solid brass chain stay was used. The lid catch is matching brass.

Leather Lid Liner: Made using vintage desk pad leather salvaged from an antique desk restored several years ago.

Inspirations: This box is one of two. I had decided to make a writing box for myself as I felt that I could do a better job than the one I had considered purchasing. In buying the material for the project I ended up with enough to make the second box. I was fortunate to be able to find single planks wide enough for the tops and not have to laminate two planks which would create a seam in the lid. This may not be possible in future builds. Being a furniture refinisher for the past thirty five years I have found that there is a great source for material in vintage and antique solid wood furniture no longer worth restoration which can be salvaged and re-purposed. Naturally bleached walnut, cherry, mahogany, quarter-sawn oak, elm, white and brown oak, and fir. I am now on the hunt for such material for my next boxes. This will not be a mass production endeavour, but one box at a time as I am able. For now.

Duofold International fountain/ballpoint pen set in the now hard to findAmber Check finish. This is a one-and-a-bit owner pen set which has seen only gentle use since it’s purchase in 2008. The set itself was manufactured in the UK in 2006 as indicated by the date codes Y.111 on the fountain pen and Y. on the ballpoint pen. Complete with all boxing and papers. Asking $850 obo.
